On Friday (27 Jan.), there was supposed to be a public transportation strike so instead of touring some of the relocated neighborhoods in Rome, we went to Tivoli!! These are pictures from the Villa d'Este and the magnificent gardens that are on the property!
These are tile mosaic ceilings which actually have the tiles sticking out of them to form 3D flowers.
After visiting Villa d'Este, we went to the remains of Hadrian's Villa. He is known as one of the three great emperors of Rome.
This is a model of what his estate looked like after it was built. It was essentially its own town with housing, a theater, and a stadium among other things.
These are Hadrian's private baths that our professors encouraged us to sneak into.
We were caught...
Oh, so that sign means we can't go in there...oops, sorry we can't read Italian....
This is our professor, Francesco, who was the one who encouraged us to go in there in the first place....He's posing by a fallen vaulted ceiling that they decided to leave in place instead of trying to show where it originally was.
Mosaic floor in the hospital. Each room had a different pattern.
You know it's been a pretty good day when the most stress you have is deciding what type of column to be-Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, ...
...or decide what kind of a statue you want to be...
...or if you can fit inside a tree, ...
...or however you're going to get out of the tree...
All in all, I'd say it was a pretty enjoyable day!
